What is Reiki?
Rei-ki is an alternative name for the Usui Method of Natural Healing. It originated in Tibet and was
re-discovered in the 16th Century by a Japanese Monk know as Mikao Usui.
Mikao Usui wanted to understand how hands on healing worked as referred to in the bible. He joined a Zen Monastery where he studied the Buddhist Scriptures and the Sutras. He found healing symbols and the descriptions of how Buddha healed, but he did not have the power to heal.
He decided to go on a 21 day meditation retreat (in search of the power to heal) on a sacred mountain in Japan. On the 21st day of his retreat, after much frustration of his unsuccessfulness, he totally surrendered his ego and became aware of a beam of light that came shooting towards him. He saw before him like bubbles of light, symbols that he had discovered in his study, the keys to healing. When the trance was over, Mikao Usui no longer felt exhausted, stiff or hungry as he had moments before on his last day of his 21 day meditation retreat. He got up and walked down the mountain and stubbed his big toe tearing back his toe nail. He grabbed his toe with his hand, and in minutes the pain had left, the bleeding had stopped and his toe was well on the way to healing.
Later that day a kind man gave him something to eat. The man had a daughter who came to assist and Usui noticed that she had been crying and that her face was swollen and red on one side. He found out that she had had a tooth ache for three days. After the girl gave Usui permission, he cupped her cheeks in his hands. In a few minutes the pain had left her and the swelling began to recede. Mikao began “healing” those who needed it and soon attracted students wanting to learn. An oral tradition was born that has expanded out to all parts of the world.
“Rei-ki” is divided into two syllables:
“Rei” (pronounced Ray) is the Universal Spirit
“Ki” (pronounced Key) is the Life Energy that manifests through us.
Therefore “Reiki” (Ray-Key) means The Universal Spirit of Life or The Universal Life Energy.

This is the energy of Life that is all around us and continually flowing through us. If you think about the energies between a piece of wood and a tree, the wood is dead but the tree is alive with plenty of Life Energy. To assist you to further understand the Universal Life Energy, it is the energy that the Chinese describe as Chi in Accupuncture, or the Indians describing Prana in Yoga. The flow of Life Energy is what keeps us alive. Yet for many of us the Life Energy is uneven, unbalanced or blocked due to the stresses and tensions of daily living, and our negative thought patterns.
This ‘Life Force’ is not associated with any physical being, is not visible, nor has any defined shape or name. It is an ‘unseen’ spiritual power that vibrates through everything. It is not a religion, nor cult, nor is it associated with any religion, sect or cult and is based on no creeds or beliefs contradictory to Universal Laws of Love and Light. Reiki embraces all philosophical systems of thought. Reiki is a radonic wave like a radio wave. It can penetrate layers of silk, linen, porcelain, lead, wool and steel because it comes from the Great Spirit – The infinite. It does not destroy delicate tissue or nerves.
What makes Reiki different to other healing methods is the attunement process. A person who has been through this process has experienced a very ancient process of tuning the physical and etheric bodies to a higher vibration.
How does Reiki Work?
People trained in Reiki can tap into the supply of Universal Life Energy and channel it through their bodies to the receiver with the use of their hands. The Reiki Practitioner does not become drained as the energy passing through their Crown Chakra assist them also.
The Healing Process
When giving a treatment the Reiki energy goes to where it is needed. Reiki assists a person by empowering them to take the next appropriate step in their growth and development according to their highest soul purpose. This is done when unresolved emotions, patterns and blocks emerge, enabling the receiver to transform. The signs of an evolving soul are tolerance, understanding, lack of judgment, and thoughtfulness. The signs of change, are when the person is willing to be less 'self' or 'me' centred, and is more open to the bigger picture of love. The person can then become less controlling of life and others, allowing thier intuition and good judgment to guide and serve them to the riches that are around them.
Reiki Practitioners are not Healers.
Reiki Practitioners are channels of Life Energy that flows for ‘The Highest Good’ going to where it is needed. Reiki flows unconditionally and the practitioners surrender to the energy supply, trusting that it will go to where it is needed to produce the greatest benefit for the receiver. A Reiki Practitioner can not promise cures and miracles. However there have been many cases reported where severe, even terminal illnesses have been healed with Reiki.

Common Healing Reactions that can occur after and between treatments.
- Feeling of relaxation, and enhanced sense of wellbeing.
- Sleep is calmer, deeper, however it may be disturbed for a while.
- Increase in urine, heavy sediment or smell.
- Stools are increased in bulk, volume and frequency.
- Increase in flatulence.
- Skin reactions – perspiration, odour or rash
- Increase in mucous secretions such as nose, cough, phlegm
- Vaginal discharges
- Previous suppressed dis-eases may flare up for a short time.
Any apparent negative responses that occur eg: diarrhea, a cold, or flu like symptom are the result of the body healing, re-balancing and discharging toxins. It may appear that a condition may worsen, but this is usually a temporary thing, usually over 48 – 72 hours. It is always highly recommended to keep the hands on as continuing to give a Reiki in a day or two to help the client through the reaction and complete the healing process.
What happens at a Reiki Treament with Rita.
- You will arrive at the Little Yoga Studio and relax in the waiting area with Divine Spirits favourite health and spiritual magazines.
- When you enter into the warm treatment room, you will hear some soothing music, smell a wonderful aroma, see candles flickering, and feel a cleansed and safe room.
- Rita will obtain your details and the reason for treatment. She will discuss in detail the Reiki Treatment.
- You will lay (usually on your back) on a soft massage table fully clothed, covered with a soft warm blanket.
- The treatment will commence with a body scan to obtain more information about where your Life Energy flow is blocked.
- The Reiki Guides are called in for guidance and asked to be used as a channel for Reiki.
- The Reiki treatment commences with hands placed over your face followed by your head, heart, stomach, legs and feet.
- Rita works intuitively and may stay in a particular body area for a longer period especially if there is pain or blocked energy.
- Your chakra’s and aura may be cleansed and balanced.
- After the treatment, thanks is given to the Reiki Guides and the person will be asked to slowly wake up.
- Rita and the receiver of Reiki will recuperate with a glass of water while obtaining feedback and discussing what the receiver can expect (over the next 48-72 hours) from the treatment.
